The Legacy of the Lynde Family
The Lynde family's journey begins in 1634, when Deacon Thomas Lynde emigrated from England aboard the Griffin. Along with his wife Marguerite and their children Thomas and Henry, Thomas settled in Charlestown, Massachusetts, laying the foundation for generations of influence. His daughter Mary joined the family a year later.
Thomas Lynde was born on January 11, 1593, in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, England, to Nathan and Elizabeth Lynde. Before emigrating, he married Hannah around 1621, with whom he had at least two sons and three daughters. In Massachusetts, Thomas quickly became an integral part of the Charlestown community. He was admitted as a freeman on March 4, 1635, served as deputy to the General Court for eight years, and was a selectman for 14 years. As deacon of the church, he was deeply involved in both civic and spiritual life.
By 1638, Thomas had become an innkeeper, selling wine and spirits. He passed away on December 30, 1671, in Charlestown, leaving a legacy of leadership. His son, Ensign Thomas Lynde, continued this tradition, and his grandson, Captain John Lynde, further distinguished the family as a member of the Massachusetts Colony Council and as Captain of the Malden Military Company in 1703.

Generations of Lynde's carried this legacy forward. Benjamin Lynde, born in 1746, served in the Revolutionary War, marrying Hannah Phipps and raising a family of six children. The Lynde's settled across New England and beyond, shaping communities as they moved.
By the Civil War, the Lynde's were once again in the thick of history. Sherman Mason Lynde, born in Jefferson County, New York, enlisted in the Union Army in 1861. Though his service record reflects moments of disruption, including desertion and re-enlistment, Sherman eventually mustered out honorably in 1865. His life carried him westward, where he worked as a farmer and agent in California. Sherman married Ella M. Sites in Illinois in 1870, further branching the family tree.
